Description:

Malama Family Recovery Center is the only agency on Maui that provides a continuum of gender-specific treatment services specifically for women in recovery from substance abuse and addiction. Malama is a non-judgemental and comfortable place where women can privately and confidentially talk about their needs and concerns with caring professionals. Gender specificity in treatment is critical to successful outcomes because women who use/abuse substances share common life experiences and have needs distinct from their male counterparts.

Therapeutic Living Program
Structured, supportive, clean and sober living environment for women and their children (up to age 5, with exceptions made as needed). We help women in recovery establish a strong foundation for sober living and support in the community. Services include:
•Stabilization
•Effective and evidence-based substance abuse and addiction treatment
•Individual and family counseling
•Skill-building classes
•Rehabilitative life skills classes
•Case management to help with re-entry into the community
•Connection with other community resources

Staff is present 24/7 to provide support. The Early Learning Center, which provides free childcare and early childhood learning and development services, is located within the Therapeutic Living Program facility.

Intensive Outpatient Treatment

Individual and group therapy as well as substance abuse treatment and counseling, education classes, relapse prevention, stress/trauma workshops and other case management services offered on an outpatient basis at our Therapeutic Living Program facility. Staff can provide transportation to and from our facility for those who need it and clients can utilize the childcare and childhood learning services available at the Therapeutic Living Program facility.

Outpatient treatment (without childcare/child-learning services) is also available on the island of Lanai.

Sober Living Program
Individuals who have recently completed substance abuse treatment programs need step-down services prior to re-entering the community in order to maintain sobriety. Most still need to address medical, emotional, financial and employment challenges, and during this crucial time in their recovery, are at high risk for relapse. On Maui there are also limited affordable housing options, particularly for those in recovery. Our Sober Living Program addresses these issues by providing a safe, affordable and substance-free living environment for women and children. Women are able to solidify gains made in residential treatment and generate healthy and sober support groups in the community. Services include:
•Life skills classes
•Individual and group activities
•Case management to help with re-entry into the community

Clients are expected to be in outpatient treatment, 12 Steps groups or an equivalent. We have a set of two cottages as well as a home with a connected ohana. Women can have one or two young children living with them and can utilize the childcare and childhood learning services available at the Therapeutic Living Program facility.

BabySAFE (Substance Abuse Free Environment)
BabySAFE is an outreach and early intervention program for women who are at-risk for tobacco, alcohol and/or substance abuse. The program offers treatment, prenatal care and intensive case management to pregnant women so they can get clean and give birth to healthy babies. As part of our commitment to making this program accessible, we provide transportation, childcare, meals, emergency food packages and childcare equipment. Screenings take place at high schools, medical clinics, health fairs and other locations where clients are comfortable. Women, doctors and representatives from community agencies can also reach out to us if they know someone who needs help.

Once women are in BabySAFE they receive substance abuse and addiction treatment and attend either group education classes or one-on-one sessions with the BabySAFE Coordinator.
